Clinical Experience
The University of Maryland Dietetic Internship Program requires their interns to have 15 total weeks of clinical experience prior to graduation. Maria spent her 12 of the 15 weeks of her clinical rotation between two different hospitals - a government veteran affairs facility and a private community hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Both locations offered unique experiences and learning opportunities that helped enhance and broaden Maria's nutrition knowledge, interviewing/counseling skills, communication and management skills. The remaining three weeks of her clinical rotation was split between a two week pediatric rotation and a one week renal rotation.
The 12 weeks spent between the government veteran affairs hospital and the private community hospital provided Maria with large patient base that allowed her to deepen her medical nutrition therapy knowledge and nutrition counseling and interviewing skills. The types of patients and conditions seen included medical critical care, post surgical, NICU, general medicine, new onset of diabetes, geriatrics, pediatrics, dialysis, DKA, oncology, tele-health, cardiac, home-bound, eating disorders, clinical management, cardiology critical care and enteral/parenteral nutrition. By the end of these 12 weeks, Maria's preceptors felt comfortable enough with her knowledge and skills to allow her to see a wide variety of patients alone. In addition, she received high marks on all preceptor evaluations.
