Information Technology
Maria has the opportunity to spend time at two different locations for the Information Technology rotation - International Food and Information Council (IFIC) and the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP) under the USDA. Both rotations provided Maria the opportunity to learn more about how the field of nutrition and dietetics can be combined with communication and mass media. She was successfully able to use her skills and experience in marketing and PR in each of these rotations in addition to improving her knowledge of nutrition promotion.
Maria spent a total of three weeks at IFIC in Washington, D.C. Here she was able to learn how nutrition and health professionals can work cooperatively with the food industry to promote overall nutrition to the public. She spent time writing blogs, creating infographics, researching and creating social media campaigns and shadowing staff dietitians. It was a great opportunity to see presentations by food industry companies and how they are eager to work together with nutrition professionals to create informative nutrition messaging.
The second information technology rotation was spent at CNPP in Alexandria, Virginia. This provided Maria with a great opportunity to work in a government facility and learn how Registered Dietitians work on promoting nutrition information and new policy to the public. She spent a lot of time working with the MyPlate project in addition to many social media projects. In addition she gave multiple in-service education sessions to staff on multiple social media technologies and other new web-based technologies. Many of these new tools are now being used to manage the CNPP social media initiatives. You can view some of these employee in-service presentations by clicking here.
