A short, one-page study on a patient with CHF exacerbation and uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. This case study reviews disease state, medications and appropriate nutrition therapy. Please click the file icon to the left to view the entire study.

Eat Well, Live Well is a short PowerPoint presentation reviewing the benefits of a low salt, low trans-fat diet and how it may improve heart health. I presented this alongside the hospital chef's cooking demonstration to promote heart health amongst the hospital employees. It was a great experience and a lot of fun to do!

Maria's major case study focused on a patient admitted with a perforated duodenal ulcer and ultimately required parenteral nutrition support. This case study show cases the medical and nutrition therapy in addition to a case discussion on the role of the RD in similar cases.

Maria's abstract, "One Intern's Experience: The Benefit of Hospital Employee Wellness Programs" was accepted to both the Washington, D.C and Maryland State Annual AND meetings. The research was conducted during Maria's clinical rotation at a community hospital in Baltimore, MD. Click here to view in html format.

Maria spent two weeks at a National Pediatric Hospital in DC. She was tasked with assessing and following a patient and writing and presenting a case study on the patient. This case study is presented on a pediatric patient presenting with uncontrolled Type 1 Diabetes. Maria examines the psychosocial effects on glucose control in the pediatric population.

Maria co-created this short ppt presentation on multiple nutrition myths and fad diets from 2012. Reviews 10 different diets/fads and how and why they are untrue. Used as a staff education tool.

Maria co-created this trans-fat handout during her rotation at Food and Friends. This handout explains the basics of trans fat and was delivered to Food and Friends clients.

Maria created this Arthritis Nutrition: Myths and Facts during her rotation at the Maryland state aging office. This handout was delivered to all senior participants on Meals On Wheels of Montgomery County. It provides education on arthritis and reviews some myths and facts about arthritis diets.

Maria co-created a How-To educational presentation and accompanying handout on creating and maintaining a blog. This presentation reviews key points plus tips and suggestions for successfully beginning and keeping a professional blog. Maria was asked to present this topic at the Long Term Care DPG Annual Meeting in 2013.

Food Service Work Samples:
Maria and her internship partner were tasked with creating 3 "wellness walls" for a large state university's food service employees. Maria helped co-create nutrition, cooking and physical activity tips in both English and Spanish that were posted on a staffroom bulletin board. These wellness walls focused on "Healthy Eating on a Budget."

Maria created general wellness advertisements for table tents to encourage wellness for student's at a large university. Each dining table has a table tent that holds 3 advertisements - one always focusing on health and wellness.

Another general wellness advertisement for table tents to encourage student's to visit the Farmers Market on campus. The market runs from April to November every year. Students are able to purchase local produce organic meats, pastries and more. Click here to view the University of Maryland's Farmer's Market website.
